Unwanted extra web records by WFilter

Postby Lukmon » Thu Jan 05, 2012 2:54 am

From what I can tell, that the blocking features work. That's nice.

However, when someone gets a virus, I'd like to view all (and only) website URLs that they typed in the browser or choose to click, perhaps from a google search.

I don't want to see extraneous crap from advertisements that tell me absolutely nothing.

I don't want to see facebook.com in the web details when I know they are blocked just because a page they viewed has an ad for facebook.

Is this possible?

Unwanted extra web records by WFilter

Actually this is a technical issue. Let me explain:

"Web surfing records" records the activity of the "HTTP protocol". However, there have two reasons to have extra records:

1. Automatic web requests by installed programs. A lot programs produce automatic web requests. For example, msn messenger or skype messenger will visit some advertiser websites from time to time. These activities are also recorded by WFilter.

2. Frame based web pages. When we visit a frame-based web page, it usually will produce multiple records according to the frame structure. A frame-based web page refer to the display of two or more web pages or media elements displayed side-by-side within the same browser window.

WFilter has tried to reduce the extra records by certain algorithms. But I believe it's not enough.

To improve your experience, there is a setting in "recording level settings" to set exception for recording websites. For example, if you don't want to record google content ad, you can add "googleads.g.doubleclick.net" or "*.doubleclick.net" to the recording exception list(attached screenshot).
