Does WFilter take a dedicated PC when it is running?

Postby eylem » Thu Jan 06, 2011 1:52 am

A couple of questions and time is running out on evaluation.

1) When WFilter is running does that take a dedicated PC? Reason I ask is that after installing

WFilter, I could monitor traffic, but couldn't access the internet or map any network drives.

2) I want to put in the extended product key. I turned WFilter off, but still cannot get any

access to activate WFilter with the new extended key. I searched help and see nothing.

I put a static IP address and still, no network connection at all.

1). WFilter does not need a dedicated PC. If you can not access internet, it should because your switch does not allow outgoing traffic on the mirroring port. For example, the mirroring port of cisco switches will be recv-only by default, unless you enable sending traffic by using "ingress" parameter.

You also can add a secondary NIC to this computer for communication. So the first NIC will be used for monitoring only. And the secondary NIC can be used to access the network. This solution is recommended when your switch does not have an option to enable outgoing traffic, or you're managing more than 100 computers.

Please check this cisco 2950 deployment example for more details: WFilter Deployment with CISCO 2950

2). The activation failure is because the WFilter computer can not connect to our activation server. I believe it will work when your computer can access the network. Or you can use "email activation" instead.
